Dolphins have been swimming and jumping around the ship most of the time. The divers in the sub can hear them talking during the dive. On the ship the crew members are scrapping paint off the re-paint the deck and the noise of their scrapper can be heard on the instrumentation of Alvin 600 meters below. I’m sure that the dolphins also hear our noises and wonder what we’re saying.
The bacteria that we are finding are some of the largest in the world and some can even be seen with the naked eye. The foraminifera that we are collecting are also single celled creatures and although we can also see some with the naked eye, we have to use a microscope to study them.
The scientists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography are collecting lots of larger creatures including, many-legged worms, snails, clams, deep-sea corals, sponges, starfish, and sea anemones, just to name a few.
On the seafloor, divers see even larger creatures including rockfish, hagfish, and large crabs.
